Blade Runner 2049

Thirty years after the events of “Blade Runner” (1982), the LAPD’s new Blade Runner Officer “K” (Ryan Gosling) uncovers a long-buried secret that could lead to Society is in chaos. K’s discovery leads him to search for Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Harrison Ford reprises the role of Rick Deckard, who has been in hiding since the events of the first film, while director Dennis Villeneuve casts perennially rainy Los Angeles and even the irradiated Las Vegas Garth brings new beauty. Great visuals and a moody soundtrack from Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch enhance the atmosphere. The film also often mirrors the original in a way that deepens its meaning.

I Am Mother

After humanity’s extinction, a teenage girl is raised by a robot designed to repopulate the planet, and a mother lives underground with her daughter (Clara Rugard), teaching her classes and feeding her, And prepare for a mysterious exam. Their existence is upended when the daughter lets in a woman (Hilary Swank) from the ravaged outside. “I Am Mother” is a contemplative and suspenseful film that leaves a daughter wondering who she should believe — if anyone. The story is well written, and relative newcomer Grant Sputore does a great job of directing, keeping your attention until the final plot twist.

The Mist

A mysterious fog has enveloped a small Maine town, trapping artist David Drayton and his young son in a supermarket. It gets worse when terrifying creatures start to emerge from the grey clouds. Trapped shoppers quickly formed factions while more rational people tried to figure out what was going on and how to get through it. There’s a lot of horrific chaos in this movie, but the beast isn’t the point. Instead, The Fog is most interested in what happens to ordinary neighbors when they are strongly coerced. What results will make you shudder. The impressive cast of Toby Jones, William Sadler, Alexa Davalos, and Marcia Gay Harden makes this movie really scary.

Oxygen

A woman with amnesia is trapped inside a pod that is slowly running out of air in this tense sci-fi thriller. Elizabeth (Mélanie Laurent) doesn’t know what’s going on, and doesn’t know her name is Elizabeth – she just knows she needs to get out before she suffocates. Unfortunately, she doesn’t remember the admin code needed. I don’t know why I am in this pod. Genre superstar Alexandre Aja deftly directs Laurent, who is harrowingly portrayed as Elizabeth.
